According to "Kokin Ichiyoshu" (Edo period), it is said that during the Tengyo period (938-947), the Heian period, Sugawara no Michizane was enshrined by Tansho Sozu who is the 9th Betto of Horyuji Temple and a descendant of Sugawara. Initially, Horyuji Temple was responsible for rituals and management, but it was managed by Horyuji Village under the Shinbutsu bunri decree of the Meiji era, and Hakusan Shrine, which was in the precincts of Horyuji Temple, was enshrined. And until now, it has been worshiped as a local god of the former Horyuji village.
