Details of the experience

Join Mr. Masahiko Hirata, an expert with deep knowledge of Horyu-ji's history, on a guided tour of the World Heritage temple complex.

He will provide insights from a cultural property specialist's perspective—covering architectural techniques passed down for 1,400 years, the allure of Buddhist statues, and findings revealed through archaeological excavations. Experience a deeply educational tour and discover new aspects of Horyu-ji that are often overlooked.
For many years, Mr. Hirata served as an archaeological technician in Ikaruga Town, overseeing excavations around Horyu-ji Temple. During the investigation west of the Wakakusa Garan site (the original Horyu-ji site), he discovered fragments of burnt wall paintings. This provided crucial archaeological evidence supporting the account in the Nihon Shoki (The Chronicles of Japan) that Horyu-ji had been destroyed by fire, effectively settling the long-standing "Horyu-ji Debate."

He served as the navigator for Horyu-ji on the popular NHK television program Buratamori and frequently speaks at lectures in Nara, Tokyo, and other locations regarding Horyu-ji and Prince Shotoku.
