Chuguji Temple
Tourist attractions
Built to fulfill the wish of Prince Shotoku’s mother Empress Anahobe no Hashihito. The temple’s most sacred image, a statue of a graciously smiling bodhisattva in the half-lotus position (according to temple lore the Bodhisattva Cintāmaṇicakra, known in Japanese as Nyoirin Kannon), is considered to have one of “the world’s three great smiles in art” (one of the others is that of the Mona Lisa.)
